Simon says...

Lew M. Simon
From the Desk of Lew M. Simon, Democratic District Leader, 23rd A.D. Part B

As we write, we are extremely excited that Tuesday is Election Day. We urge all of our friends, family, neighbors and constituents to bring the whole family out with you to vote. You can vote for us regardless of your party registration even if you chose not to enroll in a political party.

Our first priority is rebuilding after Hurricane Sandy. We have all been hit so hard and have to deal with so much red tape and bureaucracy. One of my goals is to put all of the proper heads of the agencies in the same room; Parks Department with the Army Corps of Engineers, FEMA with Build It Back. The prompt rebuilding of the boardwalk is one of my biggest commitments.

As a newly elected Democratic Council Member, I would aim to serve as Chair of the Parks and Recreation Committee and sit on the Transportation and Fire and Criminal Justice Committees. Another priority is to keep our Rockaway ferry with the $2.00 fare or free as the Staten Island ferry is. I will work with the Department of Transportation to get a HOV lane on Crossbay and Woodhaven boulevards up to Queens Boulevard during peak hours. We will get Express buses to Manhattan 16 to 18 hours a day seven days a week. Reopening the Rockaway Beach line is now in the MTA's long term plans. We will work to get the funds to get work started now.

We will continue the fight for a new community hospital and to stop the closing of any more hospitals. We will work to make sure that every school has proper computers, science labs, gyms and libraries. We will stop the colocation of charter schools that take needed space and facilities in our schools. There must be no more closing of schools and scattering of difficult problems to the neighboring schools.

We must have community policing with enough officers so they can get to know the people of the community they serve. We must keep Meals on Wheels for the seniors who need it. There must be no cuts in Access a Ride. We will keep SCRIE and SHRIE so seniors can keep their homes.

By electing me you will not be losing my work in the community. Although there are several meetings a month at City Hall, I will still be accessible and available. I will have a staff at offices serving Rockaway, Howard Beach, Ozone Park, and Woodhaven and near City Hall. My staff will be extremely professional, personable and accommodating. They will help keep track of your problems and what we are doing to solve them.

I am proud to have a campaign staff representing the various groups and areas in our district. All of us are working together to make this campaign and the real work of improving the quality of life throughout the district better after the election. After Hurricane Sandy we never faltered or stopped assisting everyone we could. I lost all, but it didn't stop me from reaching out for help for all.

Our headquarters is at 114-03 Beach Channel Drive next to the Rockaway Park Post Office. You can help this weekend by making phone calls, and delivering lawn signs and literature. On Election Day you can help by driving people to the polls and collecting results as the polls close. Call (347) 858- 6780 for information.

Come by after the polls close with the results from your voting area. With your help, we expect to celebrate and begin the improvement of our community.

Lew Simon is challenging Eric Ulrich for a City Council Seat.
