Sandy Memorial Sculpture Unveiling

After more than ten months in the making, the Sea Song creative team has announced the unveiling ceremony of their collaborative Sandy memorial sculpture.

The event will take place from 3 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, October 26th, just in time for the one-year anniversary of the storm.

Numerous Rockaway residents as well as Sandy recovery volunteers have helped to assemble this 16-foot tall sculpture using salvaged storm materials. Also more than a hundred people affected by Sandy created “resilience flags” which will hang from the top of the piece.

Organizers say the afternoon event will be a time of remembrance and community togetherness, reflecting on “how far we have come and sharing our hopes for the future.”

“Participants will enjoy locally prepared food, as well as performances by local artists, and also sharing our stories about this collective experience.”

All are invited to bring friends, stories, and candles and mementos to add to the sculpture.

They should also bring blankets to sit on and wear warm clothing for this outdoor event.

The unveiling will take place at the Hip-Hop Community Garden at Beach 59th Street and Rockaway Beach Boulevard, adjacent to the Rockaway Waterfront Alliance’s Firehouse 59 headquarters.
