Comment Period For Park Plan Extended

The National Park Service has announced that due to the federal shutdown, the comment period for the Gateway National Recreation Area’s proposed General Management Plan has been extended to Tuesday, October 22nd.

Gateway includes Fort Tilden, Riis Park, the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, Floyd Bennett Field and other units in Staten Island, Manhattan and New Jersey.

A proposed 20 year management plan, in the works for the last four years, would direct how Gateway is run, its aim and purpose, what resources will be developed, how current buildings are used and even locations to which groups and activities would be moved.

“We invite you to review the draft and share your thoughts with us,” the NPS website states.

The public is encouraged to weigh in on the plan before the deadline, as long term changes to Gateway would have a significant impact on the Rockaways and Broad Channel for decades to come.
