Celebrating Rockaway Strength

By Dan Guarino

The Queens Library is partnering with a variety of groups and individuals to celebrate the strength of the Rockaways and Broad Channel as the one year anniversary draws near.

The Rockaway Strong event will take place at Beach Channel High School on Sunday, October 27th at 2 p.m.

Preliminary plans call for guest speakers to kick off the event at that time.

The day will feature music by DJ GMoney, face painting and play therapy with volunteers from Project Hope, the FDNY Smokehouse, courtesy of the Citizen Corps, zumba, refreshments, games, Discovery Teens science experiments, courtesy of the Library and more.

There will also be spoken word stories from Sandy and poetry, presented by the Library for Teens and the Rockaway Youth Task Force.

At 5:30 p.m. a Light Up Rockaway ceremony will be observed with a moment of reflection, illuminated by battery powered votive ‘candles’ and cellphones.

Origami peace cranes will be given to all when they enter and resources packages with information from many of the participants and more will be given out at the end.

Flyers with more information and details should be appearing shortly.
