Dog Park Gets A Helping Paw
Rockaway's dog park has gotten a helping paw from a natural pet food company. The Nutro Company awarded the Rockaway Freeway Dog Park a $2,000 grant as part of its ROOM TO RUN Dog Appreciation Project.
ROOM TO RUN is a community project that supports public, non-profit dog parks. The grant awarded to the Rockaway Freeway Dog Park will be used to help make improvements that will provide local dogs and their owners with an enhanced pet-friendly space.
Rockaway Beach resident Zina Skachinsky submitted the winning application on behalf of the park. "After Sandy, our park was in rough shape. In addition, people lost the motivation to clean up after their dogs. The dog park was not just a place for the dogs to get some exercise, but also for people to get together to share experiences and resources," Skachinsky said. "We hoped that with this grant we could purchase some nice waste stations that will spruce up the park and hold up to future storms. This grant is one more sign of hope that our beloved park will come back better and stronger. We are grateful to Nutro for their generosity and support of dog parks."
ROOM TO RUN began in 2010. Through the program, more than 3,000 hours have been dedicated to enhance 90 dog parks across the country.
“Many of us use our own local dog parks as a place to interact and bond with our dogs, so we are excited to give community members the opportunity to take action and apply for grant support to help enhance their own local parks,” Monica Glass, senior corporate affairs manager of The NutroCompany said.
