The animal, which witness Leslie Martin estimated to be about 6 feet in length, was already dead when found on Sunday, August 11th.

“There were no signs of shark bites,” Martin said, “but by the looks of things (it) may have had a run in with a boat propeller.”

A National Park Service spokesperson from Gateway National Recreation Area confirmed that the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation was contacted. On Monday, staff from the foundation came and took tissue samples from the turtle.

The Riverhead Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to the rescue of marine mammals and sea turtles in New York State.

By Tuesday, August 13th, the ocean reclaimed the turtle. According to NPS, it was washed out to sea and has not been seen since.
