Surf Club Holds Volunteer Thank You Party

By Katie McFadden

The Rockaway Beach Surf Club, a community space for local residents, artists and surfers is giving back to Hurricane Sandy volunteers by hosting a volunteer “thank you” party on Saturday, August 24th.

The Surf Club, located at 302 Beach 87th Street, and several families on the block will open their homes for an intimate “block party,” so volunteers and visitors can see the progress that has been made.

Volunteers spent the winter helping the club and families around the community recover after the storm. Now the club is saying thanks to all who were there for Rockaway. Throughout the party, from 3 p.m. to midnight on Saturday, August 24th, the club will host a series of events. They’re teaming up with the Tribeca Film Festival to kick off a three-part “Secret Screening" series. They will be showing a film geared towards volunteers who arrived by bicycle from around the city. The film will start at 8 p.m. and DJ Stylus will play before and after the screening.

There will also be an art exhibit reception from 6 to 8 p.m. featuring Asha Fuller’s Recovery To Renaissance, a photo installation which documents the post- Sandy Rockaway Beach community. The exhibit runs through August 30th.

Food vendors such as Roberta’s mobile brick oven pizza will be on hand and there will be a full cash bar inside the club. All are welcome to attend.
