Music By The Beach

By Dan Guarino

Photo by Dan Guarino Photo by Dan Guarino Singer Andy Cooney and his band of musicians played for hundreds on Friday, August 16th at a free “Irish Night” concert at the hockey rink on Beach 108th Street.

Cooney, dubbed “Irish America’s Favorite Son” by the New York Times, sang familiar Irish favorites (and at least one song in Italian!) as well originals and newer songs.

Members of his multi-talented band also took the spotlight.

Adding to the informal evening, Cooney also told jokes and often got the crowd singing and clapping along. Later he greeted fans in the streets as he visited with friends in the neighborhood.

The concert was presented by the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation as part of a whole series of free summer programs in Rockaway.
