An Intern’s Take

By Ilyassha Shivers

This week marked a small victory for those who have been victimized by the NYPD’s Stop and Frisk policy. The decision made by Judge Shira A. Scheindlin supports the claims made by thousands of New Yorkers. After weeks of anticipation, the judge named Peter Zimroth as the person to oversee and reform this unconstitutional policy.

For some this is too little, too late. For others, this can be the beginning of a new partnership between the police department and communities of color. Some believe there was once a time when there was community policing, when the community and the Police Department worked together to make our communities a safer place to live and raise our children.

We can only hope that with the change of policy and the new Mayor that our city can move forward and as Curtis Mayfield said “Tomorrow can be an even brighter day.”

As August comes to an end and the children enjoy their last days of summer, Title 1 PAC and MSPS. 42 will hold their 3rd Annual Back to School Concert on Thursday, August 29th at 488 Beach 66th Street from 5- 9 p.m.

The community will come together to utilize one of the Rockaway’s newest resources. Since its completion, 42Q’s new addition has been utilized by thousands of community people and various collaborative partners including the mayor, various senators, council members and DOE. In January 2013, post Hurricane Sandy, PS 42 held the only Inaugural Ball on the Peninsula thanks to funds made available from the Mayor’s Office. If you happen to be free you are welcomed to come to this event and enjoy the elected Parent Leaderships collaboration with a former resident of Rockaway, who has been fortunate to achieve success in the music industry,

Mr. Lance “HQ” Gibbs from “Still Young Records” is also collaborating with the elected Parent Leaders to introduce a financial literacy curriculum that will be implemented in the After School program this school year. There will even be a few surprise performances from some local artists from the Rockaways.

For more information you can contact Ms. Flynn at 347-522-7621 or Queen at 347-456-6518. So there you have it. Come out and support local parent leadership and the PS 42 family.
