Playoffs begin in Breezy Point Softball

By Gerard Gilberto

The Breezy Point Cooperative league has already begun their first round of playoffs, while the league in the Surf Club enters their position week on Saturday, August 10th.

PJM, the top seed in the Co-op night league, drew the last place team, Latitude Bar and Grill, in the first round. Latitude’s regular season struggles continued in the playoffs and they were swept in a three-game series.

The team sponsored, by the Sugar Bowl, finished in second place, matching them up for a series against the seventh place Guggenheim Wedge.

The Sugar Bowl team took the first game in the series by a close score of 7- 5, but the underdogs came back to win 9- 2 on Monday, August 12th, evening the series to set up an elimination rubber match on Wednesday night.

The league’s newcomers, the Rockfish, had a difficult inaugural season but found their form in the later part of the regular season with victories against the Wedge and top-seeded PJM. This success carried into their series with threeseed Brennan and Carr in the first round of the playoffs. Team Brennan and Carr find themselves with their backs against the wall facing an elimination game on Wednesday night against the young Rockfish.

The Sandsox swept the Catholic Club in two games and now await the results of the other two series. They could potentially play any of the top three seeds ahead of them (PJM, Sugar Bowl and Brennan and Carr respectively.)

In the Surf Club, the defending champion Malcontents rounded out their perfect season on Sunday, defeating H-Court 11-4. Their 12-0 record was tops in the seven-team league and they will be rewarded with a first round bye in the playoffs.

This weekend is position week for the league with the playoffs beginning next Saturday. The first position week matchups will be the second place Amateurs against the third place Freddies. H-Court will square off against the Mixed Nuts in the next game and the basement battle of West Court and the M&M Boys will follow.

The first round of the playoffs will be three seven-inning games next Saturday, but the second round to be played that Sunday will be two nine inning games. The championship will take place that following Sunday, September 1st.
