Graybeards Family Run A Winner!
It was a special night last Friday, August 9th, for the 11th Annual Graybeards Family Run. Everyone enjoyed a fun evening in the reconstructed St. Francis schoolyard, after more than 400 runners took part in the various races. The children took over Rockaway Beach Boulevard with different ages running various distances in a sprint to the finish line. Joseph Orban and Heather Huber were first across the finish line for the Special Olympians in their inspiring run.
The races continued with the One Mile Run. Kennedy Kirk was first in at 6 minutes 37 seconds, while Christy Kohlbrenner was first in the female competition at 7:09.
The 5K race, due to the loss of the Boardwalk, used a different and shorter 4K course that went up through Neponsit, before returning to Beach 127th Street and Rockaway Beach Boulevard.
It once again featured a strong pack of runners in the 16-20 category. Patrick Goldberg of Archbishop Molloy added to his St. Patrick’s Day 5K and Rockaway Ocean Run titles in 2013 by breaking the tape in 13:08. Xavier’s Jimmy Buckley was 2nd in 13:19 and Anthony Morales of St. Francis College followed in 13:28. Goldberg and Buckley will be continuing their running careers at The College of Mount St. Vincent and The University of Scranton.
Caile Kohlbrenner of Providence College was a first time winner on the Women’s side in 14:43, with Kathleen Woods of Fairfield University 2nd and Marta Tomaszewski of SUNY Oneonta 3rd. Trophy winners in the various age categories are listed below. You can pick up your trophy at the SFDS gym during the Summer Classic, if you did not get it on the night of the race.
A veteran Graybeard Grill Crew kept the hamburgers and hot dogs coming while Billy Egan manned the beverage station and the kids kept busy with lots of fun rides. The Grayriders played an energetic set of classic rock, providing the soundtrack for the evening, as everyone enjoyed the beautiful night and a look at the now completed Fr. Grogan Memorial Schoolyard.
The Awards Ceremony and raffles concluded the night.
Race Directors Keith Goldberg and Joe Featherston extended their thanks to all the runners and spectators, Fr. Doyle and the St. Francis de Sales staff, as well as P.O. Brian McCabe and Maurice Moore and the 100 Precinct and the Run’s generous sponsors. They also thanked their fellow Graybeards and Graybeards office manager Jean Condon, and all the other volunteers, especially Jimmy Mullen, John Edwards, Felix Gilroy, Mike Egan, Cassie Moriarty, Sheila Ray, and Allison Bagley.
Next year will be the 12th Annual Graybeards Family Run.
Organizers advised Rockaway runners and spectators alike to “Mark your calendar now for Friday July 25th, 2014!”
