A 1920’s Day At the Beach

By Dan Guarino

It’s not a time warp. It’s the HBO cable series “Boardwalk Empire” filming its fourth season on Rockaway Beach.

Photographer Laura Deckelman was granted access by Associate Producer John Flavin on Friday, August 2nd, to photograph the cast and crew exclusively for The Wave. As agreed she could not picture any of the sets, which might create ‘spoilers’ or reveal clues to what happens in later episodes.

Set in Atlantic City in the roaring 1920’s, “Boardwalk Empire” revolves around a cast of real, fictional and semi-fictional characters immersed in a world of shady dealings, violence, bootlegging, gangsters, corrupt politicians and good times.

The production frequently films on location in Rockaway, using locations such as Fort Tilden’s back roads and dunes.

Here the cameras were rolling on the beach and boardwalk from Beach 38th to Beach 40th Streets.
