A Reason To Pause

We ripped up this week’s editorial at the last possible moment. Well, we didn’t rip it up, we put it to the side.

It was the editorial in which we announced we would not endorse Anthony Weiner for Mayor. We made the case why recent events made us turn away from him. We’re guessing it would have reverberated well past the peninsula.

But he showed up at a Wednesday meeting at the Knights of Columbus and killed it. He reminded everyone about his deep knowledge about Rockaway. He reminded us just how important it is for the next Mayor to understand the impact of Hurricane Sandy.

All politics is local – meaning all issues are about Rockaway. Well, who’s more local that Anthony Weiner? This is the post-Sandy Rockaway. The most important time in Rockaway’s history. Period. As someone said at the meeting, are we supposed to vote for someone who never learned about the place and will never be back?

A lot has been made by his critics that he didn’t pass any bills in Congress. But he actually did what he said he was going to do. When he first ran for Congress he said he was going to be like city councilman in Washington. He was still going to help people with their problems and not worry so much about passing legislation. He stayed true to that. He was too busy helping his constituents to worry about filling a scorecard.

We are furious with him that he’s made us turn away. His apology when he came back still seems a little too careful, a little too clever. How much was that second chance supposed to cover exactly?

The latest round of stuff makes us wonder if he’s got the judgment to actually run the greatest city in the world. He made us ask that question.

But all politics is local. Especially now. And frankly, we don’t see a slam dunk alternative. Now Weiner’s made us pause before closing the door on him. That might be the only good news he gets this week.

You've got to be kidding us.

You've got to be kidding us. Hope he texts someone in your family next. See how you feel about putting that editorial aside then! I think character counts, and I'm sorry you don't. Pat Johnson
