Toilet Trailers to Head to Arverne

By Katie McFadden

The toilet trailers are on the move. The Parks Department announced on Monday that two of the modular units, or comfort stations, will now get a spot in Arverne.

The modular units, which are supposed to serve as bathrooms and lifeguard shacks are currently located on Beach 116th, 106th, 97th, 86th, 73rd and 59th Streets. The plan to install the units in Arverne was stalled due to complaints from residents saying there isn’t enough parking or security in the area.

The Parks Department recently announced that the last two units will be installed at Beach 67th Street. They will be located just to the west of where the beach meets the boardwalk. The Parks Department chose this location saying that it would “give access to the greatest number of people with full access to the street grid and the MTA’s Beach 67th Street stop on the A train,” a spokesperson said.

It is not clear when the units will be transported. They currently sit in an empty lot off Beach Channel Drive. “We will inform the public when site preparation work will get under way and when the buildings themselves will be trucked to the Beach 67th Street site,” a Parks spokesperson said.

Not only is Beach 67th Street near the A train and bus routes, it has also become a summer hotspot as a new concession stand by Roberta’s Pizza has popped up on Beach 69th Street, serving customers on the weekends throughout the summer. Beach 67th Street through Beach 69th Street are also designated surfing beaches and various surfing schools such as Locals Surf School, Skudin Surf and Aloha NYC Surf School give lessons there throughout the week.
