Hidden Driveway Hazard

Dear Editor,

I often take the kids and dog out for a walk and we often find our way heading down Beach 129th Street. There is a dangerous situation on that block that has not been addressed despite my numerous attempts to speak to the owner of Plum Tomatoes. They utilize a hidden driveway between the pizzeria and the adjacent building. The delivery folks zip in and out of this driveway with no regard for the fact that pedestrians, many of whom are young children, are passing by behind their vehicles on foot, bike, scooter or skates. I have personally witnessed several near catastrophic accidents where my own child or other children were almost hit by the cars backing out of the driveway.

A few things to consider: 1) pedestrians ALWAYS have the right of way 2) driver safety courses advise you to back into a hidden driveway so you have a clear view on both the way in and the way out 3) investing in mirrors on the buildings (like those utilized by the bank on 116th) would create a far safer situation and have minimal cost 4) installing back up cameras are an easy option these days.

I would advise the owners of Plum Tomatoes - and all businesses that utilize these types of driveways - to take precautions to protect us, our children and themselves.

KERRY PRICE
