Sign Of Recovery

It had been nine months since this sign was carried away by the flood waters of Hurricane Sandy. Miraculously Beach 136th Street residents are now celebrating its return. One of the things that Beach 136th Street lost during the hurricane was the sky blue and sand tan painted and carved sign which welcomed all to their community. Installed in July, 2012, it read “Welcome to Beach 136th Street – Where the sun always shines.”

When the pounding flood waters of Sandy receded, like many things, it was gone, seemingly for good.

Then, nearly nine months later, it returned. It had survived.

Janice Ameruso, a resident said, “It was returned to a neighbor on the block by a woman who said she found it on her property at Beach 140th Street and Cronston Avenue.”

In all the excitement of the sign’s return, however, residents did not get the woman’s name.

Ameruso stated they do hope she stops by again so they can thank her properly.

Until then, she has their sincere gratitude for helping make their block whole again.
