Photos by Dan Guarino The Rockaway Artists Alliance welcomed a crowd of visitors to their T-7 gallery home at Fort Tilden for the launch of their first exhibition there since Hurricane Sandy.

The Salon Show features the works of 25 artists working in a variety of media. These include photography, watercolor, giclee print, assemblage, quilt, color pencil and more.

A number of new artists are exhibiting with RAA for the first time. For others, including an artist age 11, this is their very first showcase.

In keeping with summer, the well-attended opening on Saturday, July 13th, featured light refreshments of fruit and desserts as well as cool lemonade and iced tea. Lively and eclectic acoustic music was provided by John Simonelli and Dan Guarino.

An RAA spokesperson gave special thanks not only to the artists and gallery goers, but also to the volunteers who did everything from spackling and painting the walls before the exhibition to clearing debris and restoring plumbing after the storm.

“We could not have done this, could not be here opening now, without everyone’s help.”

RAA has also announced its new exhibitions for 2013.

ARTSplash, their biggest exhibition of the year, will run from September 7th to October 13th.

Calm/Storm/Rebirth, an exhibit marking the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Sandy, will be on view from October 19th to November 10th. RAA as well as many of its member artists, writers, musicians and others were deeply affected by the storm.

The “Gifted” exhibition, featuring the work of member artists, will follow in time for the holidays.

Artists can find updated submission information and applications for ARTSplash 2013 at the RAA’s website, www.rockawayartistsalliance.org.

Updated information on upcoming exhibitions and events will be posted there shortly.
