Health & Harmony

by Dr. Nancy Gahles, D.C.

Urban legend has it that there are such things as “painkillers”.

Are these mythical gunmen reminiscent of bounty hunters from the old Western movies?

Is there a gun or rifle and a magic bullet that literally can kill your pain?

In the 1990’s and 2000’s, the explosion of opioid drugs including Oxy- Contin, Vicodin and Percocet appeared to indicate a promise of relief from chronic pain. The end result was a population of prescription pain pill addicts and deaths.

The New York Times, July 2nd, 2013, reported: Sharp Rise in Women’s Deaths From Overdose of Painkillers. “More women die of overdoses from pain pills like OxyContin than from cervical cancer or homicide,” according to an analysis by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The article cites that women are more likely to be given prescriptions for pain medication along with psychotherapeutic drugs like antidepressants and antianxiety medications accounting for a significant number of overdoses.

Can you really KILL depression? Anxiety?

Can you kill the root causes of FEELINGS that cause pain?

According to a study conducted at the National Institute on Drug Abuse, the most common forms of chronic pain, like fibromyalgia, a musculoskeletal condition, are more common in women. Social trends that contribute to feelings of being overwhelmed by responsibilities, inadequacy, shame, sadness and low self-esteem were stressors.

Can you really KILL stressors?

A quantum leap in thinking must occur if we are to shift the paradigm of the sickness model to one of wellness. From killing to curing.

A culture of true wellness must emanate from addressing the underlying cause of the disturbance as the individual expresses it on all levels of body, mind, emotion and spirit.

Homeopathic Medicines To The Rescue. Homeopathy, a 200 year old system of medicine, was the subject of a large study conducted in France that showed patients with chronic musculoskeletal disorders had a 50% reduced usage of conventional pain medication when under the care of a practitioner who specializes in homeopathy and a 38 percent reduced usage in acute pain (Rossignol, Begaud, Engel, et al, 2012).

Among the musculoskeletal disorders in the study were: osteoarthritis, rheumatism, fibromyalgia, muscle spasms, tendinitis, rotary cuff syndrome, ankylosing spondylitis, intervertebral disc disorders, neck pain, torticollis and spinal stenosis.

These are precisely the conditions that people in Rockaway are telling me that they are “suffering” as a result of stress from Hurricane Sandy.

And, no, you can’t really KILL that.

You can recover and restore yourself to health.

Integrative healthcare is the new paradigm with patients at the center of their care working in a collaborative, co-creation with their team of providers.

Women, speak up! Ask for options to addictive pain KILLERS.

Your medical doctor may not have that information. Homeopathy is a whole system of medicine that is not studied in medical schools. It is compatible with conventional medicine and should be part of a well orchestrated collaborative model.
