Slices N Ices is Back
The Beach 116th Street pizza joint sustained significant damage during Sandy with three feet of water taking out all of the necessary machinery and furniture. Jason Sebastian and Joseph Ademure opened the restaurant in 2010. Steve Cannon, who owns another pizza place in Bay Ridge, joined the team after Sandy, in the hopes of getting the place open again. “I love this place. Every time I drove by it, it was closed,” Cannon said. “I knew they had a good product. I saw them struggling post-Sandy and I wanted to see them come back.”
Slices N Ices faced many obstacles as they tried to reopen, from not getting money from insurance companies to being denied by FEMA. All of the repairs were paid for out of pocket. The restaurant also took another hit when a fire broke out in neighboring Rogoff’s Card and Gift Store earlier this year. Firefighters had to break the front gate and windows of the restaurant in that incident. The owners also had to struggle with LIPA and they didn’t have gas until three weeks before the opening.
After all of that, owner Ademure says “it feels good to be back. Once we get everything in sync, it feels good.” Cannon agrees. “We’re just glad to be back and to serve the community. Rockaway is coming back stronger than ever and we’re glad to be a part of it,” he said.
