Rockaway Biz Ideas

By Dan Guarino

A few issues ago, The Wave published a slew of ideas readers sent in about new businesses they’d like to see in Rockaway and Broad Channel.

The invitation is still open. Send us your thoughts on what stores, shops, chains, services, entertainment or types of businesses you think the community could use.

Here are a few examples of what readers have told us so far.

“Here’s my wish list for the businesses I would like to see in Rockaway:

Barnes & Noble Bookstore. Since library service in Rockaway is still far from normal with the Seaside Branch on 118th Street closed indefinitely and the Peninsula Branch is operating out of a makeshift trailer it sure would be nice to have a Barnes & Noble Bookstore out here to fill the vacuum in our book starved lives.

Starbucks would be a more than welcome addition to the Rockaways. The nearest Starbucks is in Howard Beach and going to Manhattan just to enjoy Starbucks is expensive and inconvenient.

An IHOP restaurant can take over where the old Wendy’s used to be without much trouble.

Whole Foods or Trader Joe’s can move into where the old Key Food Stores used to be.

Macy’s!!!!! It’s been decades since Macy’s opened a new store anywhere!!!!

It’s a longshot that any of this will become a reality but I can dream can’t I?????”

- Sharon Rutman

“I would just love it if a KFC or Boston Market could open up over by the new Stop n Shop or at the former Wendy’s location.

I have e-mailed both companies several times, to let them know how welcome they would be in our community but, alas, I haven’t received any sort of response from either company.”
