Photo by Dan Guarino Drivers and pedestrians on Wednesday, July 3rd, encountered something they did not expect: a smooth road ahead on Rockaway Beach Boulevard.

After months of heavy work and poor road conditions between Beach 90th and Beach 94th Streets, workers finally spread out the first coat of asphalt. It was so fresh that by afternoon, people’s shoes were still sticking on it.

As many drivers know, the boulevard has been studded with potholes, dips and bumps which did not get better after Hurricane Sandy.

“I had to drive with one hand and hold my coffee up with the other so it wouldn’t bounce all over the place,” said one.

A $26 million project, started before the storm, to install water mains, sanitary sewers and storm sewers, did not help.

Undertaken by the New York City Department of Design and Construction, the project also included extensive work on the side streets as well as Beach Channel Drive.

“I can’t believe it,” said the motorist. “It’s only four blocks, but what a difference it makes!”
