Youth Town Hall Produces Idea For Jobs

The Rockaway Youth Task Force hosted a youth town hall at Goldie Maple Academy on June 28. Approximately 25 young people gave up part of their Friday evening on the first weekend of summer break to discuss some of the issues that concern them. Those issues include the lack of security during the summer when violence tends to increase, the need for more employment and activities for youth, the lack of youth involvement in the community and the lack of community spirit. One young man felt a reason for the lack of engagement of young people in Rockaway is a “disconnect between the older and younger generation.”

One viable solution that came out of a breakout session was to develop a website where young people could be matched with jobs. Described as “an online job fair,” one teen said, “It is one solution that could solve all, or most, of the problems in Rockaway.”
