Summer is here and all of a sudden everything is a good excuse for a party. Whether you’re hosting, attending, or both, we’ll help you stay healthy, sane, and on track through the festivities.

If You’re Hosting…

PLAN. Save money, time, and stress by writing thought-out lists of things you need to do and buy for your party. Make a schedule by working backward from your event date, leaving some wiggle room for unexpected occurrences. Include purchase and preparation deadlines in your planning.

ASK FOR HELP. Delegate tasks to friends and family members who offer to lend a hand. For extra ease, hire help. Meet beforehand at the location to review time frames and go over details. Communicate your expectations clearly and specifically.

MAKE IT EASY. Consider the costbenefit ratio before deciding to do all of the cooking yourself. What you save in money doing things from scratch, you might lose in time and effort. If you’re barbequing, cater salads and side dishes. For appetizers, choose readymade h’orderve platters from local specialty shops. Potluck is also a good option. Coordinate with guests ahead of time to make sure there’s an even mix of entrees, side dishes, and desserts.

PROGRAM A PLAYLIST. Compile a music playlist for the occasion and load it on your iPod. Do a sound check a few days before the party. Preparative measures like this help to eliminate surprises and stress.

ENJOY! Parties are a time for friends and family to come together in a relaxed atmosphere and celebrate each other’s company. When the day comes, don’t stress the small stuff. Relax and take advantage of this special time you have

to spend with loved ones. R&R. Don’t make any big plans for the next day. Keep it reserved for rest and recuperation.

If You’re Attending…

PRACTICE SELF-CONTROL. Parties don’t have to lead to weight gain. You can indulge once in a while without completely blowing your diet. The key is eating only when you’re hungry and knowing when you’re satisfied. Don’t feel obligated to accept everything you’re offered. Make smart decisions by choosing healthier options. For example, at a barbeque try a bun-less hamburger atop a green salad. If you decide to splurge, choose one thing to splurge on. By doing it this way, you’ll enjoy whatever it is more, and won’t feel like you’ve completely ruined your diet. REGULAR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY. Exercise a few days each week. If you find it difficult to motivate alone, get going with a friend or try group classes. Investing in an “unlimited package” at a local gym will help you stay on track all summer long. Making the commitment leads to fewer excuses.
