Stand Up and Paddle Out
A special Sandy fundraising event for Stand Up Paddle Board enthusiasts will be held on June 29th. The event, which is sponsored by SUP magazine and The H2O Generation of Rockaway is calling the event a “Sandy Can’t Stop Us” party as funds will go towards a local charity.
All residents and stand up paddleboard fans are invited to bring their boards to Beach 90th Street on Saturday for a paddle out early in the day. SUP magazine videographer Morgan Hoesterey will be capturing video of the event as part of a series that will run on SUPthemag.com. The Rockaway event kicks off the SUP Magazine’s Summer SUP Schedule, which will also include the Santa Monica Pier Festival, the Midwest Paddlefest, the Tahoe Nalu and the Chicago stop of the Standup World Series.
The Rockaway event was organized by Kelley Brooke, president of the stand up paddleboard manufacturer, The H2O Generation, as a way to raise money for Sandy victims and give them a day to relax.
“The hurricane was a very traumatic event in our lives. Many of us have little time to do anything but to rebuild.
This party is a celebration of recovery, friendships, the new concessions and a new, improved Rockaway. If the water conditions are good that night, we may even pull out a few stand up paddleboards for people to try,” Brooke said.
The paddle event will be followed by a beach party from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Beach 97th Street concession.
The party is hosted by the H2O Generation, SUP Magazine, Boarders on the Beach, Low Tide and Motorboat and The Big Banana. A suggested donation, which goes towards Rockaway Wish, will give guests access to beverages donated from Manhattan Beer and Empire wine as they listen to the tunes of Bobby J.
