Sandy Saints Help Broad Channel VFD
Students at the school had formed a philanthropic association dedicated to helping those affected by Sandy. The Sandy Saints were organized by students, parents and faculty of PS165Q. In co-operation with the Penny Harvest organization this group raised $1,000 for presentation to Broad Channel Volunteer Fire Department.
Presenting the check was Susan Long and Principal Raquel DeMillio with students and faculty. Members of the BCVFD entertained the children with a tour of BCVFD Engine 210, which was donated to the department by our brothers from Sleepy Hollow FD, Tarrytown NY.
Broad Channel “Vollies” Chief Dan McIntyre said, “We would like to thank the Sandy Saints for their generous donation; we would also like to thank all who came to our aid in the days, weeks, and months after Sandy.
“Although we suffered devastating losses to our equipment during storm rescue operations, it was especially heartwarming to experience the outpouring of support from our friends in the Fire and EMS services from around the country and the generous support from our friends in the Broad Channel community and throughout this great country.”
The officers and members of the Broad Channel Volunteer Fire Department and Ambulance Corps have served the island community since 1904.
The students also made an additional donation of $1,000 to “New York Says Thank You,” a group that is dedicated to helping first responders whose homes were devastated by the storm.
