Local Teachers Keep Their Jobs
After protests from parents and staff, PS/MS 114 in Belle Harbor and PS 47 in Broad Channel will not be losing any teachers. At least four teachers from PS/MS 114 were going to be laid off and more staff members were set to be let go from PS 47 because of low enrollment.
Parents and staff started a petition against the Department of Education, claiming that the empty seats are only because many students are still displaced after Hurricane Sandy and have not yet returned to the schools. The DOE immediately reversed the decision.
“I want to thank the Department of Education for hearing our concerns and for their immediate reversal,” Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder said.
