Tracking Weekend Wildlife

Gateway National Recreation Area is inviting all to experience the wild side of things.

On Sunday, June 23rd. from 8 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. visitors can enjoy a ranger-led walk along the West Pond Trail at the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge.

The night will be lit by the full Strawberry Moon.

No reservations are required. NPS advises all to “Please wear sturdy shoes and dress for the weather, (and) bring a flashlight.”

The walk itself is 1.5 miles.

On Saturday, June 29th, from 1 to 3 p.m. all can join the N.Y.C Audubon for a hike to look for nesting diamondback terrapins as well as mating horseshoe crabs.

Reservations are required. Those interested can contact event leader Don Riepe at 718-318-4340 to reserve a spot.

This walk covers two miles.

Both events will start off from the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge Visitors Center located at 1 Cross Bay Boulevard in Broad Channel.
