RWA Camping Adventure

Rockaway Waterfront Alliance Shore Corps students warm up by their campfire after pitching tents. Rockaway Waterfront Alliance Shore Corps students warm up by their campfire after pitching tents. Over the Memorial Day holiday weekend, students from the Rockaway Waterfront Alliance’s Shore Corps program celebrated the start of the summer season with an overnight camping trip to Gateway National Park/ Floyd Bennett Field. The students packed their backpacks and boarded their bikes for an adventure that included stops at Riis Park and Dead Horse Bay on their way to Floyd Bennett Field for the evening.

Once at the campground, students learned how to pitch tents, safely build a campfire, roast marshmallows, and tell the perfect ghost story.

The next morning, students joined National Park Ranger John Daskalakis for a sunny kayak tour of Jamaica Bay before biking back to Rockaway to continue enjoying their holiday.

RWA Program Manager, Blaze Jones-Yellin, joined Shore Corps for the event, "Floyd Bennett is a beautiful local resource with many recreational opportunities. We look forward to bringing our students out to enjoy these resources throughout the summer."

For all but two participants, this trip marked the students' first tent camping experience. After a great weekend at Floyd Bennett, the students' guaranteed it wouldn't be their last.
