Best of The Dome Ideas Selected
On May 24th, with a collective focus on imagining the future of a sustainable New York shoreline and a thriving Rockaway community, Rockaway locals gathered to screen the 25 selected submissions that have been on view in the VW Dome 2 over the past few months as part of MoMA and MoMA PS1’s Rockaway Call for Ideas.
The Call for Ideas also presented with it the intention for a call to conversation, and the Rockaway community did just that, examining, comparing, and discussing the various solutions posed in the 25 finalist videos. From these, the group identified eight outstanding choices as submissions that particularly spoke in imaginative and pragmatic ways to the direct needs and concerns of the local community. This selection includes:
AECOM with Gordon Young and why not associates; Learning from Blackpool;
Barkow Leibinger: Occupy Infrastructure
(dunes/berms on the beach with activity/park spaces);
Operation Resilient Long Island; 3C: Comprehensive Coastal Com munities (students from NY Institute of Technology);
Reddymade Design + Horns and Tails Productions 71% (artificial reefs, restoring wetlands in the Bay, buildings on stilts);
Michael Sorkin Studio 28+ (condo buildings on the shore that connect high spaces);
WATERWASH Projects; Restoration Recipe;
Sorg Architects: Rockaway Water Dyke;
And Homegrown – Ideas Grown Locally (Ideas expressed in the Dome by local residents).
