The American Institute of Architects is full of good ideas. They were here this past week to help create a design action plan that will help Rockaway come back stronger than ever. Community participation, which was crucial to the success of this effort, took place at a town hall-style meeting on Friday, June 7th. The AIA delivered their findings on Monday, June 10th. Both meetings took place at PS 114.

Created in 1967, the AIA’s R/UDAT (regional and urban design assistance Teams) program pioneered the modern charrette process by combining multi-disciplinary teams in dynamic, multiday grassroots processes to produce community visions, action plans and recommendations.

The following is a report by Harold Paez from Monday night’s meeting …

There were about 100 people in attendance and their final presentations involved recommendations for a complete makeover of the Beach 116th Street corridor to include a ferry landing where the Duane Reade is now located, a hotel where the Sand Bar is and a roundabout at the intersection of Beach Channel Drive.

The money is available through various means as detailed in the presentation by individuals who have worked in areas of devastation like Oklahoma City and New Orleans.

Thanks Harold! I love that roundabout idea. Let’s just hope the Department of Transportation doesn’t screw it up with stop signs like they did on Shore Front Parkway at 73rd Street.

Oh yeah, if anyone has the urge to get an idea fix during the week, check out the popular “Ideas Wanted” podcast on iTunes where you can download it for free!
