Cardinals Take Over First
In a battle for first place in the Minor Boys Turf Conference, the Conte’s Carpets and Flooring Cardinals defeated the Wave Runners Pirates 15-6 to take over first place by a game. The Pirates struck first scoring four times in the top of the first. Sean Hennessy tripled to score Aidan Harkins. Hennessy came home on Terence Marten’s do uble and Marten and Josh Montero both scored on Brendan Petronis’ triple.
The lead was short-lived as the Cards struck for five runs in the bottom of the inning. Philly Benoit drove in the first run, Matt Rosenhaus had a big three- RBI hit to tie the game and Brendan Dougherty singled to knock in another for the lead.
The Pirates battled right back the next inning with two runs to retake the lead 6-5. However, with runners at 1st and 3rd and no one out, starting pitcher Jack Lindon escaped further damage when he got the Pirates 4 and 5 hitters to pop up, the second resulting in an inning ending double play as Lindon alertly doubled up the runner on third.
Lindon held the Pirates scoreless in the 3rd with help from center fielder Daniel Green. Green ran down Josh Montero’s smash to left center to hold him to a single and then, with two outs and two runners on, caught up with Danny Grillo’s line drive to right center for the third out.
The Cards took advantage of their revitalized defense by grabbing the lead for good in the bottom of the third with four runs for a 9-6 lead. The runs were driven in by Corey Schwach, Benoit, Liam Rayder and Gerard McManus.
Ryan Clark homered to start the bottom of the 4th for a 10-6 Cards lead. The Pirates defense came up with two big plays after that as SS Harkins snared Lindon’s hard liner and then 3B Marten robbed Green with another nifty grab of a line drive.
Brendan Dougherty closed out the scoring in the bottom of the 5th with a grand slam on a hard hit ball down the left field line. Green pitched the final three innings for the Cards and shut down the Pirates with six strikeouts and no hits for the save.
In earlier action, the El Caribe Caterers A’s and the Seaway Marine Corp Cardinals battled to a 6-6 tie in a thrilling Pee Wee Seniors matchup. There was great pitching by both teams, with 1: Luca Perotta, Jack Roventini, Marco Conti and Randy Koeing firing strikes. Chris Light was the hitting star for the Cards with a three-hit day including a game-tying home run in last inning. Marco Conti, while pitching, helped his cause by turning a double play. Conti and Perotta combined for five RBIs in the game. Ronan Mullally had a solid day at the plate.
