From the Artist’s Studio
NEXT RAA GENERAL MEETING: Monday, June 10th, from 7:30-9 p.m. at the MoMA PS 1 Dome 2 at Beach 94th Street and Shore Front Parkway. A guest presenter will be featured.
As always, all are welcome to attend, bring their latest work or just admire those of others, and meet some very interesting fellow artists, art lovers and art educators. Haven’t checked out the Dome yet? What are you waiting for? Nothing lasts forever.
JAMAICA BAY WILDLIFE REFUGE ART EXHIBIT: “RAA on the Bay” will be on view through June 23rd at the Refuge’s Gallery. Co-sponsored by NPS and RAA, the exhibit features the sanctuary and environs interpreted in a variety of mediums.
NEXT WRITERS GROUP EVENT: DSSM McKinney Adult Day Care in Brooklyn on Friday, June 14th, from 10:30-11:30 a.m. If you have works to read or music to perform, contact Dan Guarino at TWCgxwgj@aol.com as soon as possible. Please include your name, titles, types of work (prose, poetry, music, etc.) and if it’s humorous, dramatic, etc.
NEXT WRITERS GROUP MEETING: Sunday, June 23rd from 4-6 p.m. at the sTudio 7 Gallery at Fort Tilden. YES, FORT TILDEN!
RAA is very pleased to say that after much hard work (some of which is still ongoing) and unflagging support, sTudio 7 Gallery in Fort Tilden is beginning to welcome the community back in. Open Mic Music Nights have already begun, starting at 8 p.m. every Thursday night. Sign up starts at 7:30 p.m.
Not long from now, the gallery will have its doors wide open for RAA’s first Tilden art exhibit since Sandy and for camp kidsmART and classes. sTudio 6 Gallery, where damage from the storm was more extensive, will take a little longer. However, it should be back this summer.
The first show in sTudio 7 will be a Salon Show, Saturday, July 13th-Sunday, August 11th. It will be open to RAA members and non-members, with an entry fee of $35. The work must be gallery quality and in good taste. Each artist will be allotted only a 6-foot wide space, with one foot between assigned spaces. Artists must hang their own work. Drop-off and hanging will be Saturday, July 6, times to be announced. Each artist must bring a list of titles and prices.
The exhibit will kick off with an evening reception on July 13th, from 7-10 p.m. The celebratory event will be a “Welcome Back” party. As always, admission to the exhibit and reception are free and all are invited to attend this special evening. Pick-up of work will be Sunday, August 11th after 4 p.m.
ARTSPLASH, RAA’s popular annual multi-media arts exhibition, featuring a variety of visual, literary and performance art, will run September 7th-October 13th, 2013. Submission deadline is August 9th, with drop-off August 25th and opening reception on September 8th.
Back this year will also be the crowd-pleasing “Gifted,” our holiday-season member show in November and December. And speaking of crowd-pleasing, Halloween will swoop into sTudio 7 and environs at the end of October to happily frighten all comers.
A fuller picture of the exhibitions and events will appear in a future column.
RAA is looking forward to re-opening its Fort Tilden doors to our devoted and loyal community. It will be nice to be home again. But in these months since October 29th, we have made new friends and alliances, which we hope will continue, and have had the pleasure of standing in the embrace of those welcoming us into their ‘homes.’ And so, the next chapter begins …
