Past, Present and Future Meet in BC Mardi Gras

By Kathy Louis

Mardi Gras season has begun in Broad Channel!

In spite of Superstorm Sandy, enthusiasm is high for the upcoming summer activities. Traditionally the season leading up to the Broad Channel Mardi Gras Labor Day parade, includes many fundraisers and competitions.

Competing categories in the past have included Prettiest Baby, King and Queen (or Mayor) of Broad Channel, favorite pets, and more. The season culminates in a parade with trophies for best float, walker and more.

This has been a terribly difficult year for Broad Channel and Rockaway.

Let’s show everyone that we can bounce back with enthusiasm and spirit.

Hopefully, these pictures of past Mardi Gras parades will inspire and encourage participation in this summer’s activities.

Do you remember these days gone by? Do you know the people in these photos?

The Broad Channel Athletic Club will be organizing this year’s activities.

Would you like to see more old photos of Broad Channel? Join BroadChannel.past.present.future@groups. facebook.com. Sandy stole so many personal mementos and photos from us. This Facebook page was started to share some of those old photos. Enjoy, tag people you know, download, post your own pictures and keep Broad Channel memories alive.

We are too strong to be defeated by a storm named Sandy.

We are coming back!
