PS 105 Students Walk To Fight Lupus
On May 18th, Team Captain Adam Herrera and students from PS 105 The Bay School participated in The Lupus Foundation of America Walk 2013 at the South Street Seaport in New York City. The Lupus Foundation of America is the only national force devoted to solving the mystery of Lupus, one of the world’s cruelest, most unpredictable and devastating diseases, while giving caring support to those who suffer from its brutal impact. The month of May is Lupus Awareness Month.
Herrera, a York College graduate this year majoring in psychology, organized and helped fundraise for the Lupus walk. The students from The Bay School PS 105 Q and Herrera formed the team called TEAM BRING IT and raised $1415 in two weeks for the walk and to honor his mother, Becky Bonilla, who is battling lupus since last year. She also works with the students from P.S 105 Q after school. The students worked hard throughout their academic year facing challenges like Hurricane Sandy, but were willing to give their time and dedication to the cause and to honor “Ms.Becky” as they call their after school leader.
Herrera said he was proud of their efforts and proud that they walked in honor of his mom and the thousands who are battling Lupus daily. He said he was happy that his mother was able to complete the three mile walk that day. He stated that his mother is a strong, caring, loving and resilient woman and he will always be there to support her and the Foundation for Lupus. Herrera also noted that it was great morning filled with excitement and looks forward to next year’s walk in 2014.
