Slice Of Life

By Beth Hanning

Even though we may have had the heat on at the beginning of the weekend, I think the weekend was a great start to the summer. Even though the barbeques had to be inside on Saturday, I still had a lot of laughs and great times seeing people I often only see in the summer and rarely see in the winter. Even though I had to leap off of the cement pilings from the old boardwalk to get onto the beach on 121st and it was a bit windy it still felt pretty good to put my toes in the sand. One thing that many of us have learned this past year and even recently with the tornadoes in Oklahoma is to appreciate what we do have and do not dwell on what we do not have.

Connolly’s, Jameson’s and The Bungalow Bar: what a great weekend when you can go to all three places. Although it was in the 50s on Saturday, that did not stop me from having a pina colada with my friend Pat Brady on Saturday night. So what if we all had jackets on and we went there after an indoor barbeque and not the beach? It was also good to see Indaculture playing at Connolly’s.

The new and improved Bungalow Bar. The guys at Bungalow did an awesome job getting ready for Memorial Day Weekend. The whole place looks great. And even though it was freezing Saturday night, the inside was packed with people having a great time. Sunday night was even better since it was a little warmer and the 5th annual party was the best ever. The Grayriders started the evening and DJs Teddy and Louie Mole had everyone dancing all night.

Being able to walk to Jameson’s and grab a burger or a sandwich is another thing to appreciate. And some of you may not know, I am a bit of a bathroom aficionado. When I was a child I inspected bathrooms all over the state. So for me the ONE good thing about Sandy is the renovated restrooms in some of our local places. Jameson’s’ new restrooms are my favorite.

I hope as you are all reading The Wave on Friday or Saturday morning the heat wave that is being predicted actually arrives. My 15-year-old Megan actually asked me very seriously last Friday afternoon, “Mom, is it going to get hot this summer?” I replied, “Yes Megan, it is going to get warm and the sun in going to shine so bright.” Happy Summer everyone.

**So even though I am very happy summer is upon us after I finish my column I will continue my letter writing campaign to all of our elected officials letting them know about the dangerous way we have to get onto the beach at some of the blocks.**
