Crime Prevention: Ask For ID

Prevent crime: beware of Deception Burglaries!!!

Deception Burglary is when a person or persons gains entry to your home by posing as an employee of a particular company.

This impersonation may include but is not limited to, utility companies such as Con Edison or National Grid, delivery companies like UPS or FEDEX and construction or contracting companies such as plumbers or electricians.

A common scam involves someone in a work-type uniform appearing at your door and asking to get inside.

The explanation might be “A pipe broke down the block and we need check the water” or “We have to check the electrical connections.”

Once inside the perpetrator(s) manipulate and/or distract a victim in order to obtain their valuables.

With so many post-Sandy workers, utility company crews, city and state inspectors, insurance agents and federal representatives in Broad Channel and the Rockaways, it pays to be alert and ask for ID.

Don’t become a victim. If you’re not sure, don’t let them in. Also be aware if you see the same people going to neighbor’s doors with the same routine.

You can verify city workers’ identity by calling 311.

To verify Con Edison workers call 1- 800-752-6633. For LIPA call 1-800- 490-0025; for National Grid call 1- 800-930-5003.

And do not hesitate to call 911.

You might stop a crime before it happens.
