Ken And Jen’s Fitness Forum

By Jen Font de Bon & Ken Peña

We’re Jen Font de Bon & Kenny Peña, certified trainers, spinning instructors and nutrition nuts from Suncycle Studios. Our goal is to help people reach theirs. We promote physical, mental and emotional health, aiding others in finding and maintaining a balanced lifestyle.

Exercise should not feel like a chore; it should be something you look forward to. Avoid falling into a workout rut with these tips!

ROCK OUT! For a motivational push that will help you work out longer and harder, choose songs with a tempo of 120 to 140 beats per minute. If you exercise solo, make a playlist for your iPod and press shuffle. Mixing up the order of your favorite tunes will keep the activity more interesting and you more engaged.

For buddy workouts, synchronize your iPods. Collaborate on a playlist and put songs in an order that flows. Listening to the same music at the same time will keep you and your partner(s) connected and enthusiastic. Don’t be afraid if you have different tastes in music. Be open, you just might discover your new favorite artist!

Need even more inspiration? Try a group fitness class such as indoor cycling. The social aspect, variety in routines and different music styles of instructors keep classes fresh, fun and exciting!

MULTITASK. You don’t necessarily have to cozy up on the couch to get into a good book. Feed your body, mind, and soul by taking that new novel you’ve been dying to read on the road with you. Plugging into audiobooks during your endurance workouts can keep you going longer without getting bored. Choose an engaging book and you’ll be saying, “Just one more chapter”, which translates to one more mile.

Feeling curious? Podcasts are free and cover a vast variety of topics. One of our favorites is “Stuff You Should Know”. Or try a language course to prepare you for an upcoming trip!

GEAR UP. Using proper workout apparel helps avoid injury and irritation and boosts comfort and confidence! For extra motivation and instant results try a heart rate monitor watch. This device tracks heart rate, speed, distance, intensity levels, calories burned, etc.– and what’s best, no chest strap needed!

CHALLENGE YOURSELF. Whether you’re looking to lose weight, prepare for a race or beat a personal best, setting a goal and working toward it can be a great motivator. Find a support system and track and record your progress to stay focused and committed.

MIX IT UP. Get creative with your workouts. Incorporate cardio machines, running and cycling outdoors, weight training, and stretching to keep exercise interesting and effective! Also, alternate between endurance and interval training, as well as light and heavy weights. If you don’t have the time, knowledge, or self-discipline to put together varied workouts, try a group fitness class with a certified trainer. All you have to do is show up and follow directions!
