A Missed Opportunity

Dear Editor:

I saw an article about someone proposing to use artificial reefs to protect the Rockaway shoreline. You might find it interesting that I had submitted a formal suggestion to do that along the northern coast of NJ more than 10 years ago (and re-submitted a few years later), using the rock from the Harbor deepening projects (millions of cubic yards of rock). I’m convinced that if my suggestion had been adopted and the reefs constructed, millions of dollars in property damage would have been avoided. Homes would have still been flooded, but not destroyed (the surge would have still happened, but the reefs would have diminished the wave heights). Although my suggestion was favorably received outside of my office, a few people within my organization shot it down because I believe they just didn’t like something new being proposed that would have complicated their existing shoreline protection plans.
