National Nurses' Week was observed at St. John's Episcopal Hospital with a lecture on nursing legal issues presented by Edie Brous, JD, RN. Brous is the recipient of the prestigious David F. and Mary Louise Condon Prize as well as the Archibald R. Murray Public Service Award, both from Fordham University. Ms. Brous (center) is flanked by Marie Jessie Polycarp, Director, Risk Management, St. John's (left), and Marie Flordeliza, Chief Clinical Officer, St. John's. St. John's Episcopal Hospital in Far Rockaway packed a full roster of activities into National Nurses' Week, which was held from Monday, May 6th through Sunday, May 12th. May 12th is the birthday of Florence Nightingale, who is considered the founder of modern nursing.
In 1974, President Richard Nixon proclaimed the week before her birthday as National Nurses Week. It was noted as a time to recognize nurses for their unique contributions in their many capacities as leaders and caregivers in the field of healthcare.

Among the many activities that took place at St. John's there was an award ceremony honoring the distinguished nurses of each nursing unit as well as friends of nursing, a lecture on legal issues in nursing presented by Edie Brous, JD, RN, a high tea and a "mocktail" hour.
It was high tea for the nurses at St. John's Episcopal Hospital celebrating National Nurses' Week Nurses came attired in their best hats and gloves, sipped tea and sampled pastry on Wednesday, May 8th.
Each nursing unit also elected a Nurse of Distinction nominee. The nominees were honored during Nurses' Week at a ceremony held on Monday, May 6th, at the hospital.
