Bike Parade Ready To Roll!

On Saturday, May 18th, the Rockaway Waterfront Alliance is inviting everyone to participate in the 2nd Annual Rockaway Bike Parade. The event was created to celebrate humanpowered transportation.

Parade participants are encouraged to get in the spirit and get creative with costumes, bikes, skateboards, floats, skates or any other "people-powered" carts or vehicles.

They can also dress the part and wear something goofy, fun or ridiculous! Participants can enter as individuals, or come with a group theme. Local businesses, schools and community groups are also encouraged join in and participate.

This year the parade, a family friendly event, will depart at 11 a.m. from the RWA’s Firehouse 59 at 5803 Rockaway Beach Boulevard, travel west along Shore Front Parkway and end at the MoMA PS1 VW Dome 2 at Beach 94th Street for an awards ceremony and celebration at 1 p.m.

A panel of select judges will award three "Best In Show" trophies. These will be for "Most Artistic," "Most Entertaining" and "Most Eco-Friendly".

Last year’s parade featured cyclists of all ages and varieties, including riders in jelly fish costumes, a band on wheels and a pirate ship built on bicycles.

All participants must register in advance. Please sign up at www.rwalliance.org/rwa/events/.

Children under 14 must have a parent or guardian present with them and sign their waiver on the day of the event. This event is sponsored by National Park Service.
