The Students Of PS/MS 114 Sound-Off About Sandy
The bible says in Isaiah 11:6, that “a little child shall lead them…” In an allegorical sense, these words are significant for the Rockaways, and prophesy the means to our survival from Superstorm Sandy. Our children were frightened, and I felt compelled to bring their concerns into an arena where it was “cool” to express fear and confusion.
I want to thank Mr. Grill, and the wonderful teachers and students of PS 114 for welcoming me into this arena, where the fifth-graders and members of The Writers’ Club became the virtual voice of our community. Their expressions provided the catharsis they sorely needed. If we listen we’ll realize that their apprehensions mirror ours, and we’ll heal as they did. I listened and these little children led me from the darkness of despair into the healing light of hope. Their poems renewed my pride and faith in the Rockaways, and strengthened my belief in survival and restoration. Above all, our children’s poetry speaks of their love for our community. We must stay and rebuild, and return it to them brand new. – Joan Diehl, Writing Teacher, PS/MS 114
