HB Relay For Life Invites Rockaway/BC Runners

The Relay For Life of Howard Beach is kicking off its fifth year of showing their HOPE for a cure. With the storm behind them, the group may have gotten off to a slow start but apparently nothing will stop the community from hosting a successful event.

“We are going to raise as much awareness and funds as possible,” said cofounder of the community event and cancer survivor, Melissa Fochetta. “We would like to invite all of the Relayers from the Rockaways to come out to celebrate and remember with us, so that together we can show exactly what HOPE can do.”

The group would like to have as many survivors present as possible. Each year more than 100 survivors walk the triumphant first lap to kick off the night and this year they would like to have even more from the surrounding communities who were hit hard by the storm.

Phyllis Inserillo, who has chaired the event from the beginning, wants to get groups from the Rockaway area involved in the event. “We’re all in this together,” Inserillo said. “The worst is behind us and we want this to be a special night for everyone who knows how important the Relay is and how special of an event it is.”

The Relay for Life of Howard Beach will take place on June 8th at Frank M. Charles Memorial Park with the opening ceremony at 5 p.m. They will also be hosting a children’s event during the day called Kids Kare 2 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and a dance-a-thon called Dancing Towards a Cure, with registration and check-in starting at 11 a.m. and dancing beginning at 12 p.m.

“We will be out at the park all day. We hope to see both new and old faces!”
