Free Compost and Woody Debris Drop-off this Weekend

Improving the neighborhoods of Rockaway and Broad Channel after the devastation of Hurricane Sandy includes the removal of dead shrubs and trees and subsequent re-landscaping.

This weekend, the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation will assist in this effort with a debris collection and compost distribution initiative.

We are conducting a wood debris collection effort, during which trees, shrubs and branches could be brought to two locations for chipping. At these sites, compost (which provides beneficial organic matter when incorporated into soil) can be obtained at no cost. Please bring bags and shovels for the compost.

The plant drop-off and compost pick-up locations are: Saturday, May 4th, from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. at the Neponsit Health Care Center parking lot, Rockaway Beach Boulevard, west of Beach 149th Street, and Sunday, May 5th from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. at the parking lot on Seagirt Boulevard and Beach 15th Street. For more information, visit nyc.gov/parks or call 917-618-1595.
