Dorothy Dunne

OOPS!

If you read my last column, you may have thought, “Oh! Dorothy’s 85 years are really showing.” If you were unable to make sense of what I was writing, it was because the first sentence or title of that column was missing. Errors occur and usually it is the other way around. I must admit through the years The Wave has been very kind to me in covering up my flaws.

I was writing about the fact Frances Abbracciamento will be 100 years young on May 9th. Her family is celebrating with a mass at St. Thomas More Church in Breezy Point. Pick up the church bulletin for details. Frances is a well-known member of Breezy Point Coop and is recognized by many as owner with husband Sal of the successful Abbracciamento’s on the Pier Restaurant in Brooklyn. You can Google her to know more.

WE NEED IT NOW! …..I am referring to the reconstruction and rebuilding of Rockaway since Sandy’s devastation. In Breezy Point alone only 400 homes remain occupied. It is a ghost town. Slowly, and ever so slowly, folks are moving back into semi-livable homes. The funds haven’t been there for them to repair and reconstruct. Expenses have far exceeded money paid out by insurance and FEMA. Help is still needed and we need it NOW! Summer is almost upon us and they are proposing homes must be raised nine feet above ground. How are homeowners to pay for this? Will funds be provided? No dunes have been erected along the ocean. The National Park Service has put up life guard stations and beaches will be open to the public, but what else has been done? No protection against forthcoming storms.

I did attend the FARROC (For A Resilient Rockaway) morning meeting at AIA (American Institute of Architects New York) at the Center for Architecture, NYC. This project is related to the Arverne 80+area site. Could it be extended to and include the Breezy Point area???? Will the National Park’s Department approve? The concept is good. And they want everyone to participate in the competition who seeks to build a storm resilient community for mixed income occupants. Your ideas and concepts must be submitted by 5 p.m. June 14th. On July 15th semifinalists chosen will receive $30,000 each for further development. These submissions will be due on Monday, October 7th at the AIANY office. The winning project team will be announced October 24th and will receive an additional prize of $30,000 towards the development of the project with the City, L+M Development Partners, the Bluestone Organization and Triangle Equities. For more information and how to submit a design visit: www.FRROC.com

At a meeting I attended on Hydraulic Fracturing, the dangers of air pollution and water contamination were of deep concern. Mayor Bloomberg has approved drilling of the pipe line through the Rockaways. Be assured the latest report I received is that no future drilling will start before approval that the fracturing will not be hazardous in the surrounding areas. Operations have been suspended for 24 months until the Commissioner of Health determines its safety from the United States Environmental Protections Agency.

This past Sunday was a sunny day and a good day to help a good cause against Child Trafficking at a Media 4 Humanity, Fifty Shades of White in Central Park. Dress code was all white attire, which went well with the tasting of the thirteen best restaurants in NYC. Of course, I did not make it out of there without tomato sauce on my white pants and so did a few others. Not that the meatballs floating in it weren’t delicious as were the crab cakes and lobster salad, sushi and others. News announcers, violinist, dancers, fencers, singers entertained us all. This is sixth annual White Party by founder/CEO Melanie Siben. She was inspired when on assignment for CNN in Bangladesh where she witnessed child slavery. We need more people like Melanie to help raise funds to fight this cause. Follow @media 4humanity on Twitter and Facebook.
