About That Painting

Dear Editor:

I believe I know where the picture was painted in your “Painting The Past” article.

I live in Tuckerton, New Jersey after moving off the “Rock”.

I always came to Rockaway growing up in the 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s in Howard Beach. I moved to Rockaway in 2001 and lived on Beach 106th Street.

Since I retired from city service in March, my wife and I moved to be with family down here and to spend time with our 9 year old grandson.

Anyway, I get The Wave delivered to keep up with all that goes on. With the P.O. the way it is, I don’t get delivery till Wednesday. after the Friday release day.

The painting, I believe was painted from the Howard Beach to Hamilton Beach Bridge. I used to hang out on the bridge 40 years ago and the picture is exactly what I saw.

The bridge was wooden back then and I used to see people painting off it all the time. You are looking east towards the airport with the train running behind the houses.

The south on the right would be Russel Street. I have no way to go there, and check and there may be a house or two missing now, since I’m in New Jersey. The main road running over the bridge is 102nd Street.

Well, keep up the good work and let’s see if anybody else guessed right.

HAROLD SCHMITT
