Closing? GED Program In Danger

The NYC Department of Education Office of Adult and Continuing Education which sponsors the GED Prep class at PS/MS 183Q has discussed the possible closure of the program. According to the school, this is due to a lack of committed students.

The program requires that 20+ students attend regularly during the week. PS/MS 183 had classes from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. It is for adults 21 and over and runs from September to June each year.

Jacqueline Stillwell, Parent Coordinator at the school, also advises that there is speculation that as of January 2014 the city is planning to charge $250 to take the GED test ($50 per section). Right now the test is FREE to those who register with the NYC Department of Education for their GED.

She states, “It is imperative that those interested join now to be tested by December 2013.”

PS/MS 183Q is also looking for adults who are serious about obtaining their GED. Says Stillwell, “It is important that members of this community help by participating in this GED program.”

Anyone interested in obtaining a GED, please contact Stillwell, at 1-718- 634-9459, ext. 1370.
