St. Rose Wins Championship!


The new CYO champs: Saint Rose of Lima’s 8th Grade Boys Basketball team played hard and won big. The new CYO champs: Saint Rose of Lima’s 8th Grade Boys Basketball team played hard and won big. Rockaway Beach’s own St. Rose of Lima 8th Grade Boys Basketball team won the Brooklyn/Queens CYO Diocesan Championship on Saturday, March 23rd. They beat the undefeated St. Vincent Ferrer 60-45.

To get to the Championship, the team had to play two tough games the weekend before. They won against St. Joes and St. Patrick’s from Bay Ridge.

The game against St. Joes was close throughout with St. Rose leading for the first three quarters. St. Joes then took a 3 point lead. St. Rose responded with a clutch 3-point shot by Josh Timmer, which began a streak of 15 straight points by him.

Defense and scoring came from Isaiah Brown, Matt Schoenfeld, and Nairon Thakurdyal. Rebounding was led as it has been all season by David Young, Thomas Collins and Kieran Mills.

Sunday’s semi-final against St. Pats saw both teams struggle in the first half. In the third quarter St. Rose raced out to a 12 point lead due to good all-around play from the whole team. They extended the lead to 18 in the 4th before winning 44-32.

The Championship game saw St. Rose come flying out of the gate quickly scoring the first 10 points led by a suffocating press and two 3-pointers by Isaiah Brown.

St. Vincents went on a run of their owntakinga2pointleadinthe2nd quarter, before a strong finish to the half by Nairon Thakurdyal. The second half saw St. Rose come out on fire to build a big lead with many players scoring big baskets.

CJ Gallagher, Kieran Mills and Matt Schoenfeld all had 6 points in the second half. Strong defense, rebounding and scoring also came from Thomas Collins, Josh Timmer, David Young, Harjit Liyal, Alberto Hernandez, and Alex Cuglewski. Isaiah Brown led with a game high 20 points. Final score was 60-45.

Said coaches Kenny Collins and Doug Schoenfeld, “We would like to thank the Principal of St. Rose, Mrs. Theresa Andersen, for getting us back into our gym safely and quickly following Hurricane Sandy.

“We are proud of all these kids who stuck together and handled themselves like gentlemen after this storm and all they have been through. We are honored to have been your coaches for the past six years and this Championship year. You’ve all grown into fine players and good young men.

“We also want to thank the parents for their never-ending support. Special thanks to Brendan Moriarty our PAR for the tireless work he puts into our program, Kieran Mills for doing whatever was asked of him, and Jackie Warren, our biggest cheerleader, always keeping the team up with her positive reinforcement.”

They also wish the best the of luck to all of their 8th grade team in their future endeavors.
