Spring is here, and with the new season comes vows to clean out, reorganize, and revamp our surrounding environments. This year we’re challenging you to take a different approach and spring-clean from the inside out.
Follow these tips to make over your body, mind, and soul. Don’t skip meals; instead revamp your diet. Skipping meals slows down the metabolism and most of the time will make you consume more calories later because you’re so famished. Keep the pantry stocked with healthy snacks, such as plain yogurt, fresh fruits and veggies, nuts, seeds, dried fruit, whole-wheat crackers, and hummus. If you’re always on the go, cut up and pre-pack servings in zip-lock bags beforehand. Doing it this way will also help you control portions. Get plenty of rest. Avoid eating late at night and trade in time you usually spend in front of a screen
(TV, computer, tablet, etc.) for relaxation and meditation. Lie flat, close your eyes and focus on breathing deep, in through your nose and out through your mouth.
Get rid of tension by relaxing one body part at a time, starting with your toes and working your way up to the crown of your head. Move throughout the day and engage in more intense exercise a few days a week. If you work a desk job, get up and walk around for at least five minutes every hour. Also, sneak in exercises whenever you can for an extra burst of energy.
For example, before sitting back in your chair do ten squats. For your more intense workouts, take it outside, buddy-up, and try group classes, such as indoor cycling or bootcamp. Working out in group situations is proven to deliver results faster than exercising alone.
Instruction from certified trainers, motivation from peers, and socialization are a few elements that will help you stay inspired and committed. Rid your body of harmful toxins.
Sip on lemon water and green tea throughout the day. Avoid foods that are fatty, processed, or refined and cut out sugar, alcohol, tobacco, caffeine, and high fructose corn syrup. Some suggestions of great detox foods are: leafy greens, artichokes, broccoli sprouts, lemons, flaxseeds, garlic, watercress, beets, asparagus, cabbage, ginger, and grapefruit. Replace unhealthy cravings with healthy splurges. For example, a ten-minute chair massage at your local nail salon is a great reward that will help you de-stress and stay on track. Be true to yourself and honest with others by acting in accordance to who you are and what you believe in. This can take a lot of courage, but it’s sure to provide a big boost in confidence.
