Parks: Remember The Handicapped

Dear Editor:

I was born and raised in Rockaway. I’m in a power chair due to polio and I’d like to go to the beach, but without a blue mat it’s impossible. I was on the para-olympic swim team as a teenager and still swim. The blue mat on 116th Street is useless. The wheelchair crowd from the nursing homes are content to stay on the boardwalk. Surfside and Dayton Towers have lots of handicapped taxpayers in scooters and wheelchairs that would love access to the beach. I’ve seen my neighbors carried into the ocean on chairs because we have no mat. I heard that there would be a “hub” made on 106th Street with a concession and bathrooms. PLEASE help get the Parks Department to place a blue mat there, too. As things get rebuilt, this is the time to do it right and include the disabled in any improvements made. Thanks!
