Bye To CB 14
As my 24 years on Community Board 14 comes to an end I would like to thank Borough Presidents Helen Marshall and Claire Shulman for giving me the opportunity to serve the Rockaway community.
I am pleased to say that Rockaway is a better place today than 24 years ago, but many unresolved issues remain. There is inadequate public access to Jamaica Bay, most parents are dissatisfied with their public school options, health care has become an issue since Peninsula Hospital was mismanaged into insolvency, transportation is grossly inadequate, spiraling tolls increase Rockaway’s isolation and the Parks Department is managing the boardwalk repairs about as well as the Transportation Department managed the creation of the “shared bike lanes.” And now in the aftermath of Sandy, there is a whole new set of issues that need to be resolved.
These problems have solutions, but I have no confidence Community Board 14 will find them. In fact, I doubt they will even discuss them. After all, to make an omelet you have to break some eggs, and no one on the community board has the courage to break any eggs.
